Stereo-typing

istereoI listened Barak Obamas message to the muslim community. Quite amusing and more a contrast with his predecessor Bush. He openly advised not to stereotype anybody, be it a muslim or an American. Its easy to say but hard to do. We must understand that stereotyping is never constant, it changes from age to age and era to era. The very barbarians from the north of Europe are now the most advanced and settled communities. The indiands have changed their image from snake charmers to highly skilled work force. China has established itself as the global manufacturing unit. America went on the other side as the bad guy stomping its views over the world. It took sri lanka a few weeks to go from the oppressed to the oppressor. My brother went to Colombia in South America, India was known to be the land of learned and peaceful and vegetarian people. Probably they never saw the bajrang dal or have never comeacross a KFC in India. Similarly the Australians view Indians as rude and arrogant race with xenophobic attitudes. These two completely different typecasting of one community in two different nations at the same time indicates that it is easy to say but difficult to confront and establish a real image. It would only happen if more interaction is to occur, this would be possible only if we let the others be ‘arrogant’ for some time and may the other bear my ‘rudeness’.
